English is my first language. Artmaking is my second.
I connect to the image and different vocabularies when I draw, paint, sculpt, collage, and make prints. I enjoy that each material has its own grammar, syntax, and cadence. Sometimes I am immersed in a direct connection between my sensation and/or perception, and my image-making toolbox. Other times, I find myself thinking in words to analyze, measure, evaluate, compare, and summarize, as my image develops.
Both drawing and collage are my default tools to understand and organize my experiences. Moving visual information around by erasing, shifting, copying, ripping, gluing, editing, overpainting, and scraping, help me to evaluate and to make authentic choices. The most exciting thing for me is the freedom of thought.
Sometimes when I draw I feel connected to past drawings, from other artists and my own. Creating art connects me to memory, associations, and spurs me to invent and be bold. I like that thoughts can be seen, and that the relationship between things and myself can be visual.
Art is always a physical activity and tactile. I touch with my eyes and make marks with my body.
